House Size Limits in Boulder County, Draft #1
Aug 20th, 2007 by sorbe
The City of Boulder Land Use Department issued a first draft of its plan for proposed structure size thresholds at its August 15th meeting. The memo is fairly involved reading; however, the intent of the draft is to begin to limit the overall size of the homes and projects built in Boulder County. Exceeding size requirements would require the purchase of development credits, while homes built smaller than the threshold would be eligible to sell excess credits.
The limitations are likely to stir debate between property rights advocates and conservationists, as well as ignite discussions about the county’s role in preserving resources, and ultimatlely, neighboring views for the homes and properties adjacent to these large scale structures. Supposing that these larger homes are built according to strict standards (green certifications, zero energy, cradle-to-cradle, etc) will neighbors’ opinions of oversized homes be enough to limit their size?
