Improv Architecture
Oct 2nd, 2007 by scottan

Last week I was inspired by a couple of designers who spoke about the increase in awareness about recycling and construction deconstruction. Re-used building materials are starting to become and more more available, and Boulder is fortunate to have a local organization, Resource 2000, that sells recycled construction materials.
This concept of building using available recycled materials is more organic and free-flowing than traditional building. It’s almost like starting out with an idea in mind to get you started in a solid direction, but without the limitation of materials or a preconceived design. Go to your local reclaimed building materials supplier and, as you walk around, keep your eyes open for items/objects that could be used to build your idea. The materials themselves, then, become integral in the design of your project.
An exciting component about this approach to building, aside from the obvious benefits of recycling materials that otherwise would be discarded, is community. Bring a friend or companion along on your trip to the supplier, and get them involved in your idea — imagine how you could be inspired by like-minded people trying to make a difference by using what’s available to achieve their building goals.
For a deeper look at Resource 2000, check out this article recently published in Boulder County Home & Garden… there’s a useful Q & A at the end that I found helfpul. And, regarding this “improv architecture” idea, drop us a note and let us in on a concept or idea that you would like to build. We would enjoy the opportunity to help facilitate your ideas …
Thanks for information.
many interesting things
