Modern Design

What is modern design? Is it made of forward looking architects, designers, and artisans who from the 1800’s brought new and diverse concepts, materials and elements of design for the future? Is it sterile, clean, and simple design? Or shiny, strait, and recycled designs of the past made for today? There is not one definitive definition for modern design, it is constantly evolving with each decade, environment, and space.
In Boulder, modern architecture design can be found in the newer residential developments of North Boulder, and commercial spaces at 29th Street Mall. Modern classic interior design can be seen at the St. Julian hotel fireplace or at the sleek hand washing station composed of unique materials at Seven restaurant. The design of today, modern design is found throughout our Boulder restaurants, shops, and homes.
Design Within Reach (DWR), a modern design company bridges sustainability and history with their designs and design concepts. At their Boulder studio, located in the historic 1898 Willard building on Broadway, DWR brings classic designs of the past to our modern day residential and commercial spaces and environments. Their unique products bring classic modern flare and function to a space.
This Friday, December 14th DWR is collaborating with CU Boulder and Denver architecture and planning students to design and fabricate eco-friendly modern furniture with emphasis on embodied energy, lifecycle, materials and minimal waste. This event pushes future designers and architects beyond everyday product design and into new approaches of thinking.
When: Friday, December 14th; 6:30 - 9 pm
Where: 2049 Broadway, Boulder Colorado

I think this forum is great. Boulder sadly needs it. There is some really interesting work being done here, but it still feels like Boulder is in the wilderness when comes to issues of architecture, design, urban form, etc. Boulder’s early and enthusiastic embrace of green construction techniques and sustainable architecture will only be stronger and more interesting when it is wedded with an open-minded and innovative design community.
This event pushes that relationship forward, it should be great.
It is exciting to see a national brand such as DWR get involved on a local level and support creativity. Good Job DWR……….
Hello,
Thank you for sharing this with us. I enjoyed your articles that you have written. I can’t wait for the next one. You have a talent.
What is modernism? This is a definition that was passed along to me: “In the progressibist view, by contrast, history runs the risk of being turned away from altogether. Instead of looking to paradigms of the past, the futurist looks to radical invention of both social program and formal relationships. That is, by turning away from tradition and history, looking instead to a utopian future, the progressivists believe that they are actually being true to the relativity of their own time. This is in fact the basis of Modernism and underlies the tendencies of the avant-garde.”
