DesignJam’08: Next stop, Boulder?
Jan 18th, 2008 by Boulder Design Festival 2009
On Wednesday, January 16, 2008, the AIGA of Denver hosted its first design competition at the Plus + Gallery. A panel of three judges watched as contestants designed their way to the final round on one of three Apple workstations each housing a unique set of graphics, fonts and textures. With only 15 minutes per heat, each designer carefully incorporated their style in conjunction with limited tools accessible.
The judges granted points according to appeal, technique, individuality and concept thoughtfulness. Registration was limited, so through the crowd of the 115 guests you could hear other creatives shout tips and how-to’s, wishing they were in control of the happenings on stage. Of course the advantage was in the crowd, as we each got to watch every move the designers made on the screen projected behind them.
The final design crafted from a mere phrase such as, “Go Green!” was as intriguing as the gallery’s collection. It was fascinating to watch while listening to the sound of the DJ’s beats and enjoying beverages and snacks. Within 3 hours we experienced three heats, three contestants each, and only one winner. The mood was of pure excitement and awe, making me only wish that it would last longer. Colorado needs more events like Design Jam ’08 to bring together the design community, as well as to educate, encourage and inspire one another. So my question to you, what does Boulder think?
Be sure to check back and read an interview with one of Boulder’s contestants currently employed by Mayfire.
