Art and airport?
Jan 28th, 2008 by rlsorbe
The Contemporary5 benefit art show is being displayed at the Boulder Municipal Airport, Hanger T-1 until Jan 29th. Having never been to the Boulder Airport, let alone in a hanger; I thought I should check it out. I found this space to be a unique location, open environment, and very fitting based on the art featured by the five famous artists from Northern Europe.
Contemporary5 introduces cutting edge global contemporary art in targeted markets including LA, NYC, Miami, Chicago, Nashville, and Boulder. Contemporary5 is evaluating opening a permanent space in Boulder, Colorado in 2008.
Their concept, “is based on short events which vary in location and style depending on art exhibited. This is a move away from traditional gallery and art fair environments thus creating an element of unpredictability into experiencing new art.”
I’d like to see more exhibits of this nature and concept in Boulder. What if we were to adopt this concept, and regularly have ongoing short galleries in unique locations throughout the city? Where would you want to see stop #2?
Contemporary5 Boulder
When: January 25 - 29, 2008 (one more day to check it out)
Where: Boulder Municipal Airport
I made the trek to the Boulder Municipal Airport last night and was privileged to meet Sam and Ivan, the founders of Contemporary5. It’s nice to see the level of professionalism that exists in other cities here in Boulder. I hope that this trend will continue and we can finally raise the bar artistically and professionally. Boulder needs more events like this and to attract people who appreciate it.
Overall a cool exhibit. Jyrki Parantainen’s work was my favorite because of his technique. I think the “Personal Museum” piece was a photo of a photo - how else could he have pulled that off? There’s no way that was a photoshop job. Would have preferred to see the camera image in Antti’s work a little less. Kind of took away from the mystery of a few of the pieces. The photographs of the garages were great - the color, angels, strong and industrial feel; very unique especially considering you can’t see that in Boulder. The space was fun to visit and I hope for an event that would absorb my time in the future in the same space. Happy that Contemporary5 is here. Would be cool if they opened a gallery.
Thanks for the positive remarks from everyone! A quick note on techniques, there were no digital enhancements to the work displayed at the show.
It was great to have so many out visiting and we are very happy about the positive feedback. Stay tuned for more from us in the future…
Art at the Airport? Yeah, that’s what I said when a friend turned me on to it Sunday afternoon. Really glad I went out there. I was pleasantly surprised to not only find thought provoking contemporary art in Boulder, but that a relatively large amount of it had sold (and at $1000+ a pop).
Could it be that Boulderites are actually finding out that $ will buy more than fancy mountain bikes.
