Boulder Innovation and the Solar Carport
Apr 21st, 2008 by rlsorbe
Following the post, Boulder Innovation and Blue LED Light, I’d like to call your attention to another Boulder innovation - the Solar Car Port. With both functional and solar design concepts, the carport was originated by our own local solar company, Lighthouse Solar - specializing in design and installation. This design combines protection from outside elements and captures solar energy together in an aesthetic yet responsible design. Very intriguing.
When solar panels were first emerging, many individuals and homeowners saw the bulky solar panels as a complete eyesore. Today, we use solarscaping - a new take on building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems. “Unlike the traditional BIPV systems that are designed into a structure from the blue print phase, solarscapes work with new and existing structures and can minimize the aesthetic concerns of adding PV to your time,” states Topher Donahue, author of Solarscapes - A New Face For PV. Beyond the carport, Lighthouse Solar has integrated PV systems into awnings, pergolas, hot tub shades, and gazebos (see photos). According to Scott Franklin, president of Lighthouse Solar, solar installation is limitless “… fences, fountains, greenhouses, archways and sunrooms are all good candidates.”

I like the solar industry’s new approach and design advancements and look forward to seeing what the future will bring to improve both aesthetic quality and energy efficiency into our neighborhoods, developments and homes. On a personal note, I would like to see the carport concept incorporated into an even more resourceful element - bikeports. I’ve heard talk about this happening, and the potential for it is high, especially here in Boulder. As many Boulder developments, both private and public, are under going change - I’d like to see these ports integrated into existing and new architectural design. And why not? Colorado is a leader of solar innovation with a strong biking community - not to mention our 300+ days of sunshine per year.

Can I put a solar shader from the garage going west to the property edge at 538 Dewey? Trying to get a master plan for property improvements in time for solar purchase to get federal 2 thousand dollar credit before deadline 2009.
