DPB: Whole Foods Redesign - Scott Rodwin and Jill Kamas
Apr 28th, 2008 by contributor

Located in the Cross Roads Common Shopping Center, we will explore the Whole Foods Redesign from the Architect Challenge at Design Project Build. Scott and Jill investigate a sustainable building approach through their architectural designs.
Team: Scott Rodwin and Jill Kamas;
Rodwin Architecture
Project: Whole Foods Redesign
Program Approach: Expansion of Whole Foods into the Barnes and Noble Store to create a “flagship” store in terms of sustainability and community building characteristics:
- Make a building that creates its own energy via geothermal heating/cooling, photovoltaics, and capturing wind energy
- Make a building that creates a place for community gathering (move parking below ground and introduce a park above)
- Use the roof of the building to capture sun, wind, rain, snow and to grow crops
- Use all passive solar strategies for designing the building to take greatest advantage of its solar orientation and our climate
- Use all of the latest green technologies/materials to design and construct the building
- Create a mixed use project offering dense urban housing, and office space right at the city center - creating community and minimizing the need for car trips
- Extending out from Whole foods are pedestrian/bike links that provide for safe carbon free transportation routes for the community (Create a safe pedestrian/bike link south across/under/over Pearl Street, through the promenade at the 29th street mall, across/over/under Arapahoe connecting to Boulder Creek Bike Path at Scott Carpenter Park
- Open pedestrian/bike corridor north between Whole Foods and stores directly east connecting to Goose Creek path across Mapleton Ave., effectively/safely linking Whole Foods to the Boulder trails system
- AND . . . make it creative, fun and beautiful!
- Create a public plaza/community park/ Farmer’s Market in front of the store
- Re-think the entire commercial plaza; add green roofs and solar panels to the entire project
- Create a 4 story greenhouse that harvest rooftop rainwater, grows food year round and brings natural daylight into the heart of the building
