With vibrant color and stark elegance, check out the next sneak peek of “ Kitchens on Fire” with designs from Harvey M. Hine Architects. Located at 1155 Canyon Boulevard, architect John Clarey explains:
This kitchen is a central hub in an open, free flowing design for an urban loft. The architect and owner developed a concept of embracing eclectic events within a modern framework, while maintaining the openness and volume of an urban loft. The kitchen and dining booth provide central social gathering spaces that unite formal and informal living spaces with expanding views to the flatirons at either end of the loft. The kitchen also is a focal point, terminating one end of a gallery hall. An inverted “bowling alley” soffit above links the gallery hall to the kitchen.
Materials reinforce the eclectic-within-modern concept. The traditional red leather dining booth flows seamlessly into the sleek flush cabinetry of the kitchen. The playful red Avonite bar-top and red leather panels of the booth contrast the urbane dark woodwork and flooring, black CaesarStone countertops and stainless steel appliances and hardware.
Abundant natural day-lighting from adjacent living areas and a large skylight above are augmented with PV powered halogen lights to provide accent and task lighting. Low level ambient light from the light cove above balances evening lighting and provides visual warmth to the space.
The flush cabinet wall of the relatively compact kitchen screens the utilitarian spaces from the public areas and houses the day to day clutter away from view. The kitchen can accommodate large social gatherings and yet is still comfortable and functional for just the immediate family as well. The openness affords the cook views and social interaction. This playful kitchen combines utility with sophisticated elegance.
