Kitchens on Fire - 3978 Arbol Court, daj design
May 15th, 2008 by contributor

The next kitchen design we will feature from the “ Kitchens on Fire” tour, which starts tomorrow, May 16th, is 3978 Arbol Court designed by daj design and built by Dusel Custom Builders. This kitchen demonstrates how “Luxury meets Eco-Logic,” Andy Johnson explains:
This kitchen, along with its adjacent spaces, are the end result of uncovering multiple layers of previous cumbersome and complicated remodels, and tying the entire house together through a common theme of material use and color scheme. The newly created interiors is truly a diamond in the rough - an oasis of modern design within the context of modest builder-style houses in North Boulder. The kitchen’s main feature, the island, immediately invites both homeowner and guest to be engaged in the space, providing a flexible gathering point that can be both formal and informal and is a functional work space for cooking preparation. The island is simple in form, and its drama and relationship to the open space is emphasized by its thick 12cm turned-down countertop and rectalinear shape.
The highly contrasting color scheme is modern by nature, accentuated by the dark wenge veneer of the cabinets, stainless steel appliances, and shades of white used on the ceilings and walls. The 6cm perimeter countertops of white Caesarstone are a nod to the main design feature of the kitchen island, The existing flooring of character-grade red oak along with carefully placed accent color walls were used to help bring warmth and texture into the space. Varying degrees of natural daylighting and carefully designed electric lighting provide the finishing touches.
This kitchen (and entire remodel) demonstrates how “Luxury meets Eco-Logic.” The project boasts an environmental ethic that parallels few others. Materials used in the project were entirely zero-VOC (volatile organic compound) with a few finishes being low-VOC. This included paints, wood finishes, adhesives, even down to the drywall texture and mortar bed for the tile. The cabinet construction is formaldehyde-free, and the veneer is a resource efficient, manufactured wood that creates an undistinguishable real wood look. The windows, appliances, and lighting were all updated to Energy Star rated models. The furnace and water heater were replaced with the highest efficiency models available on the market, and a whole house fan was installed to reduce the demand on the cooling system. Natural ventilation is encouraged through operable windows and mechanically ventilated skylights throughout the house.
