When a Bike Becomes More Then a Bike

There are a few moments in my life that stand out more then any other, they involve a bike. Some of the most intense and vivid emotions my brain experiences, involve a bike. For 10 years I have been racing bikes, the kind you pedal. Those two wheels have carried me across oceans, farm fields, the continental divide, various parts of each coast, and everywhere in between. I am a racer, but my two wheel passion doesn’t end there. My mountain bike flows over swooping singletrack. My cyclocross bike takes me escorts me over dirt roads. But the townie, my townie bike takes me everywhere.
This bike, it represents independence from cars, roads, parking spots, and gas. But it also represents me. Who I am. Who I try to be. I put the bike together. Chose exactly what I wanted. Made it my design. One gear, no brakes, blinky light, and bell. I am not alone in this sentiment regarding my bike and its purpose. There are a many who also share these feelings, and each has there own unique variation on their bike and its design.
As May comes to a close and with it official bike-to-work month I challenge you to find your bike. The one that represents you. Only in hind sight do I realize how two wheels, a chain, a seat, and frame, amongst other parts, would truly affect my idea of design.
