Living Architecture - MODERN Preservation
Jun 13th, 2008 by rlsorbe
Historic spaces are often distinguished as old and static, lacking freshness and modern appeal. I was recently invited to take a tour of one of Boulder’s most historically significant structures, the Highland Building, and found the very opposite to be true. Known for it’s value as Boulder’s first National Historic Landmark (1977), but also for it’s symbolism as living architecture that encompasses a renaissance of ideas and concepts from within - the Highland building represents Boulder’s creative and entrepreneurial spirit.
As a historic venue, this space accommodates charm along with the latest technology and advancements with wireless access and state of the art appliances throughout this late 19th Century architecture. As far as new ventures and opportunity, the Highland Building can be accredited to hosting the first club of it’s kind here in Boulder, the City Club, as well as executive office spaces hosting some of Boulder’s top business leaders, including Sinco International Investments and and Metzger Associates. With 12-foot ceilings, this building houses architectural distinction and wisdom, amongst a number of incredible events, speakers and services. Simple, clean and elegant design was infused within each aspect of this building; from the lighting, eclectic paintings and art, to the library of books, garden-fresh flowers and furniture throughout the building. This is quite the incredible space!

The newest extension to the Highland Building includes high-end residences that include full concierge services and the opportunity to take advantage of Highland’s extensive service offerings including access City Club amenities and events. These three townhouses were built from creative inspiration.
The composition of materials and textures bring life and contemporary refined tradition to the living spaces inside the homes. With the introduction of large doors that open up onto private balconies, you realize that the location, although very urban, has a very restful and beautiful natural setting.
So as we continue to explore Boulder’s architecturally and historically significant spaces, the Highland Building is another success that connects our City’s history into present times. Possibilities and explorations continue to evolve through new endeavors, operations, management and stewardship of this property, 885 Arapahoe, and it’s surroundings.
