Urban Technology and Green Development

Denver is ranked 9th in the top 10 largest 50 US Sustainable Cities nationwide for their green development strategies and innovative technologies. From Denver International Airport being the first major airport in the country to implement an Environmental Management System and the City being a pioneer user of light-emitting diode (LED) traffic signals, to the City’s two national models of innovative urban infill development (former Lowry Air Force Base and former Stapleton International Airport); Denver has taken strides in their sustainable development initiatives. They continue to implement this commitment to sustainability, smart growth and education through Green Print Denver.
Boulder has also continually taken innovative steps in sustainable developments and technologies. For example, Boulder is home to the first LEED Certified Platinum residential house in Colorado, the Boulder Community Hospital is the first LEED Certified green hospital in America (2003), the city-run North Boulder Recreations Center has one of the largest solar hydronic systems in the country, Boulder’s Outlook Hotel is known for their “zero-waste” policies, and the list continues . . .
Through these two closely linked Cities that are filled with tons of innovation and technology, I wonder what are some of the next steps Colorado can take in their Urban development that are in alignment with sustainable growth and green practices? Check out this Popular Science interactive website, The Green Mega City. This site explores the most visionary ideas put forth by scientists, engineers and designers to create the ultimate sustainable future. With cutting edge technology including energy highways, power sidewalks, water robots and algae parks - they have pooled some the most inspiring ideas into a blueprint that paves the way through innovation and possibilities. While these ideas may seem futuristic, I don’t think that they are that far off.

Alex Papas is getting ready to bring you the first Green Island in the world, called Star Island. Papas and his partners are developing a paradise within a paradise, for the rich and famous. This luxurious 5-diamond private island community is nestled at the northern end of the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. Just a 55 min flight away from Palm Beach, Ft Lauderdale or Miami and only a 10 min boat ride to the island and Harbour Island is also only a 10 min boat ride away, yet light years away in its unique culture and ambiance of unhurried ease.
This 35-acre private island paradise will consist of 45 beachfront and dockage estate lots. There will be a condominium-hotel and waterfront bungalows. The island will have every amenity possible including world renowned restaurants, cafes, boutiques, club house, grocery store, tennis courts, basketball courts, state of the art fitness center & high end spa, marina, helicopter pad, and a park. Private boats and limo take you to and from the island and the airport. Hundreds of palm trees will cover the island and its beautiful sandy beaches. The island has elevations up to 24 ft and the best bone fishing in the world. The entire island will be managed as a 5 diamond hotel. Anyone can call at two or three in the morning to request a bottle of champagne and your favorite midnight snack. We’re creating a luxurious atmosphere. When done the island will be 100% off the grid and carbon neutral. In addition to being self sustaining the development project which includes a mix of private home, resort residences and bungalows plans to use environmentally friendly materials including LED lights and geothermal temperature control devices.
