How many engineers does it take to change a light bulb?
Jul 21st, 2008 by contributor
You can ask this to the engineers at TerraLUX, a Boulder-based company that invents, design, develops, patents and manufactures OEM LED lighting solutions based on its proprietary TerraLUX LED Light Engines. Holding multiple patents in a variety of situations where LEDs are used to replace incandescent lighting for both DC and AC applications, TerraLUX is able to converge the disciplines of electrical, optical, mechanical, thermal and manufacturing expertise to deliver the highest performance LED light engines to the industry.
The birth of this business began in 2003 with founder Anthony Catalano Ph.D, his wife, a patio that lacked electricity and an incandescent lantern that would not last more than one hour per battery replacement. After several lantern replacements, Catalano saw the opportunity to retrofit incandescent flashlights and decided to take matters into his own hands, as he designed an electrical circuit to act as an intermediary between the batteries and the LED. Through this concept, he quickly recognized that this idea had commercial possibilities and zeroed on LED Retrofit kits and portable lighting as the logical target in their LED efforts.
TerraLUX has rapidly developed their AC and DC product lines over the past few years. Through their AC markets, TerraLUX sells specialized UL approved LED Replacements for MR-16 bulbs in architectural lighting fixtures manufactured by the Lumiere division of Cooper Lighting. These 12VAC units replace 50 Watt bulbs with a 12 Watt LED light engine and enables Cooper to guarantee the fixture and light for 3 years on highly specified lighting fixtures. The LED units provide up to 600 lumens and incorporates a number of unique patent features for safety, reliability and performance.
Through their DC market, TerraLUX serves a number of channels with LED Upgrade light engines for flashlights, lanterns, automotive, commercial, dental, medical and industrial markets. These light engines are manufactured in large quantities and range from performance of ten to over one thousand lumens. In addition, they incorporate patented technology for heat dissipation and lighting control.
TerraLUX is constantly bringing new and improved innovation to the LED industry and product lines. They have had a role in expanding markets ranging from flashlights and ultraviolet products to their influences in the medical and dental professional-grade product lines. With green technology, they have invented ways to reuse your existing lighting structures and to incorporate longer lasting LED capabilities. Below are just a few of the products that were developed through TerraLUX, for a complete listing of their products - check out their site, http://www.terraluxcorp.com/. Stay tuned, as in the upcoming weeks we will explore the latest technologies in LED architectural and and landscaping lighting developments.
