Inside the studio: Slice of Lime

Spacial architecture, interior design, and color play important roles in influencing creativity, inspiration and clear thought processes. Recognizing this, Boulderspace will be capturing architectural and interior design of Boulder’s creative studios over the upcoming months. Please contact us if you are interested in featuring your studio in this series.

Slice of Lime’s offices are located within a historic building in the heart of downtown Boulder on Pearl Street. Once a pharmacy, exposed brick and the hint of the building’s original windows can be seen in every room of the office. While tipping its hat to the days of old, the rest of the building has been redone to encourage the highly creative and collaborative workspace that Slice of Lime requires.

Slice of Lime is the leading strategy, design, and development company in Boulder and its workspace is certainly a part of their success. Three offices on the north side of the building look over the Pearl Street Mall and offer quiet spaces for phone calls with clients. As you walk up the stairs you notice new bamboo floors leading you right into the common room. This large space is where Slice of Lime’s web designers and developers sit together and collaborate on projects. It’s easy for a designer to shout across the room to a developer for a quick question and this is just the type of interaction Slice of Lime wishes to encourage.
Creative annuals and books on coding in PHP line shelves on desks and in cubbies throughout the office. Slice of Lime has an open account with Amazon and employees are encouraged to not only learn from one another, but to purchase any other resource that will help them grow in their job.
At the north end of the office, a large flatscreen display hooked up to an Apple TV box rotates through photos of the Slice of Lime team enjoying various activites outside of work such as skiing in Beaver Creek and rafting down class 5 rapids on the Arkansas River. The flat screen also doubles as a place to rock out with a quick game of Guitar Hero.
A waiting area for clients is located on the north west wall of the common room and offers several books on startup companies and the latest Boulder County Business Report. A fish, “Mac”, swims inside of a gutted out Macintosh Classic computer.
On the south side of the office, a full kitchen with granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances makes it easy for Slice of Limers to bring lunch to work and grab a cold beer at the end of a long day. The kitchen also includes a bar countertop which makes it easy to host a monthly meet-up group called “Boulder Creative Commons.”
Two bathrooms, complete with a shower and lockers, are located in the southwest corner of the building. This makes it easy to go for a run at lunch or to bike in to work.
The common room and conference room both have skylights and the other offices have floor to ceiling windows. This natural light means that the actual lights are rarely turned on, saving electricity and also creating a much warmer atmosphere.

The conference room includes a large wood table and another flatscreen monitor. Clients can be brought up on the monitor during video conference calls. A wireless mouse and keyboard can be passed around the table to show off client work on the monitor as well. Statler and Waldorf, the two characters from the Muppet Show that heckle the stage, look down on the room from above, keeping the Slice of Limers in check. In fact, there are many toys strewn about the office, some of which Slice of Lime has created themselves as part of internal creative initiatives to keep the juices flowing.

Slice of Lime partners, Kevin Menzie and Jeff Rodanski, aimed to create a space that encouraged both a fun place to come to every day and a great end product for their clients. So far, the team is loving the new space and feels they have found the perfect home. Visit Slice of Lime on the web at www.sliceoflime.com or drop by and say hi anytime.
