1734 Hawthorn Ave - Landmarks of the Future

Continuing on the 2008 Landmarks of the Future Tour: Architects at Home, we introduce David Barrett’s house, (Barrett Studio Architects), at 1734 Hawthorn Avenue:

Located in North Boulder, the Garden House earned its green moniker as it hems the northeast boundary of the Community Gardens. The house has always been seen as an extension of the urban agricultural character of this land, which has been home to the Long family’s iris gardens, as well as to Growing Gardens & Cultiva’s community gardens.

Bringing the garden closer, the home and garage wrap a generous courtyard. The courtyard is anchored by an apple tree, which delightsthe senses year-round, acting as a seasonal guage. Trellises with grapevines allow sun through in the winter and shade the living areas & outdoor sitting / dining areas in the heat of the summer. Off the upper Master Bedroom is a covered sleeping porch, inviting stargazing, taking in the distant view of the Flatirons, and functionally reducing the need for mechanical cooling on the hottest days. These elements, along with developing vegetable and flower gardens, form outdoor rooms consciously intertwined with natural wonder.

The modest 2500 square foot home - with design studio above garage - uses passive solar, highly insulated alternative building systems (Cempo, a recycled polystyrene block), and high performance glass as energy responsive design strategies. Future plans incorporate recycled solar collectors for active solar hot water & photovoltaics. The interior material palette reinforces this sensibility, with concrete floors & strategically placed walls providing thermal heat sink, zoned radiant floor heat, cork flooring in the kitchen, clay plaster walls, and highly energy efficient appliances throughout.
The Garden House fits graciously into an existing neighborhood while expressing new materials that speak of groundedness, balance, permanence, and harmony.
