Advances in training techniques, pool design and swimsuit technology have all contributed to the record breaking times being awarded at the
Beijing Olympic Swimming Water Cube. With 8 world records broken in this facility,
Jason Lezak not only won the gold medal for the United States, but the US has also shattered the world records by nearly four seconds. What can be contributed to the overall performance of this years Olympians?

LZR Racer is the world’s lightest woven swim fabric, contributing to it’s reputation as the fastest suite on the market. It is said that the LZR Racer can boost performance as much as 2%. According to Joseph Ogando, Senior Editor of Design News, “The LZR Racer came out of a development program that seemingly has more in common with aerospace engineering than swim wear design”.

MO.Free (MObile Freedom) continues to flourish,
Special Transit (ST) is excited to unwrap some of it’s continued ideas. Biodiesel, solar power generators, LED lights, recycled and sustainable interior furnishings and decor are some of the products being incorporated into the mobile space. Staying true to its community-centric approach, ST is looking for partners to create this mobile resource that can be used by Boulder citizens and it’s affiliate groups. Below are some ways in which you can take part and support the development of Boulder’s meeting space “MO.Free”.
MO.Free Vision: To model how collaboration of non profit, public, and for profit groups can create mobile community meeting space by recycling a retired HOP bus to optimize social and community benefits.

Boulderspace brings you the results from Project OR at the
Outdoor Retailer 2008 - a student design competition that exhibits the strength of the outdoor industry and calls attention to the importance of innovation and new fabrication. This year they called upon 5 students from design schools throughout the country to participate in a 48 hour challenge. Each student was given a different consumer profile to full fill their needs in apparel through product design, using materials provided by textile vendors throughout the show.

Outdoor Retailer Summer Show (OR) in Salt Lake City. We are witnessing some of the most innovative, functional, and purposeful designs in the outdoor industry for 2009. Retailers, engineers, designers, and textile professionals have all come together to showcase their products for the summer of 2009. Year after year it amazes me that the outdoor industry can consistently innovate and update existing products. Just when you thought you had the lightest sleeping bag or the best tent and stove, watch out for 2009.

Filling the niche between a car and a motorcycle, the
Solartaxi is coming to Boulder on August 10th and 11th. Take part in history, as this is the first time ever, that a car is driving around the world with the power of the sun. Solartaxi is a Swiss solar powered vehicle literally driving around the world raising awareness of technical solutions to carbon based problems. The Solartaxi has traveled over 22,000 miles around the world without a single drip of gas. The team started in Switzerland, drove east through Europe, Asia, Australia, China, west coast of USA and is now on the road to Boulder, Colorado.

HOP Bus into a mobile community meeting space called MO.Free (MObile Freedom).
This concept originated as a solution to a problem many of us face, the need for more room. Local non profit
Special Transit will be expanding to “Recycle Row” in 2010 with the facility design assistance of
OZ Architecture. During this time of growth Special Transit is looking outside of itself to see MO.Free come to life.

I have been noticing an upward trend in fiber jewelry recently. I like the youthful colors and designs that this fashion instills. Specifically, I have noticed a number of different designers who have been working with felt of all colors, shapes and sizes.

This past July, CU Boulder installed Building Dashboards in two campus buildings, Baker and Libby Hall. You might be wondering, what are Building Dashboards? Made by
Lucid Design Group, the dashboard is a resource that fosters a unique approach to energy conservation and education. It is a user-friendly system to track energy performance and ratings in real time. The goal for these dashboards are to help educate individuals about their day to day energy consumption via an array of visible and easily interpretable images. This web-based technology renders the environmental performance of buildings, providing information to compare current data to historical data, as well as compare one building’s energy use to another.
